Assumption is a Diocesan parish located in the Germantown section of downtown Nashville.
For many years now the Church of the Assumption has been home to Nashville's Traditional Latin Mass Community. Bishop Spalding has expressed his respect for all those who experience such profound spiritual fruit in the context of the Traditional Latin Mass and has assured them that their spiritual needs will continue to be met here in the Diocese of Nashville. He has designated the Church of the Assumption as a stably assigned location where the faithful may gather on any day of the year for the celebration of Mass according to the liturgical books in use prior to the reform of 1970 and has designated and appointed the Reverend S.B. Price, pastor of the Church of the Assumption, as his delegate entrusted with overseeing these celebrations and the pastoral care of these groups of the faithful. To this end, the Church of the Assumption has permission to celebrate the sacraments and sacramentals according to the Roman Ritual of the Usus Antiquior.
However as a territorial parish, the Church of the Assumption also provides the faithful with access to the Mass and sacraments celebrated according to the liturgy promulgated by Saints Paul VI and John Paul II.
We are also home to the Syro-Malabar Community of Nashville, who celebrate Mass according to the Indian Syro-Malabar Rite in the Malayalam language.
We believe this remarkable liturgical diversity is a great enrichment of the life of the church in Germantown.
ASSUMPTION WINTER WEATHER POLICY
With winter weather possible in the near future, I wish to communicate the procedure Assumption will follow in the event of inclement weather. Please be aware that as well as trying to keep our schedule as regular as possible, we need to also weigh the risks and safety of having parishioners travel to and around our facility in inclement weather. Many parishioners travel significant distances to attend Mass and that weighs heavily on my mind.
During weekdays if Metro Nashville schools are closed, Mass will be cancelled, and the office will be closed.
On weekends, Saturday & Sunday, the situation will be a little harder to predict. Obviously, you will need to use your judgement as to if it is safe to travel from your home to Assumption. The local news & weather would be the first resource as to road conditions. If the newscast advises “ If you don’t have to be out on the roads, please stay home” please heed their advice. We do not have the resources for snow and ice removal and our gravel parking lot cannot be plowed. It is also unlikely that metro will plow side streets in time for Mass.
If there is snow and ice on a Sunday, it is dangerous to travel, the Sunday Obligation is commuted to the reading of the Mass readings & collect and the recitation of the family rosary for all families who are unable to make it to Mass safely.
